“Spooky” Exercise Complete!
Posted in Journal by Kevin A. Ranson at 5:54 pm |

It took a little under ten days, eleven total segments, and just under 6800 words to complete my short story introducing my character’s version of himself and the world he created. Both myself and a buddy of mine kicked ideas back and forth regarding the character for a cooperative storytelling game, and I know he has plans for writing up his own version in a mostly different setting.

I did this for a couple of reasons. First, it was fun playing a dead kid as a character, then writing as that character as if he’d written the story himself. Secondly, it establishes a neat little world that I’m already considering expanding upon and taking in its own direction. Finally, I wanted to see how fast I could crack out and edit up a full-length short story from an idea that was pouring out of me and seemed intent on writing itself (which I’m told is the hallmark of a great character to begin with).

The main differences between the story version here and the role-played character are as follows:

  • Spooky is much younger and more capable in his own story.
  • The world Spooky actually inhabits is one of super heroes, not strictly the paranormal.
  • The Veiled Woman turned out to be a mythical character in BOTH versions; great minds thinking alike?
  • Spooky’s dad is dead in his “real” world and lost a brother as well as his mother.
